Our Story

We always loved the name ‘GreenShag’. Maybe it was because we had  GreenShag rug at home growing up (like so many children of the 70’s did). Possibly it was the fact that many of our fondest memories came from a childhood spent in the cool, simplicity of the Canadian landscape. Perhaps the name itself just had attitude. Enter Victoria, a fashion journalist who grew up ‘behind the tweed curtain’ (the nickname for the thoroughly British enclave of Victoria, BC called Oak Bay). Her memories of her ever-stylish Grandfather, John Daniel, in his tailored tweed outfits and gorgeous argyle socks sitting with his similarly dandy friends on park benches discussing the weather inspired a life-long love of classic men’s fashion. When Neil, an advertising executive with a love of great brand came onto the scene, things began to form. Victoria first saw Neil in a baby picture where he sat on a GreenShag rug. Introduced under the pretence of an 'information interview', the two met for coffee and, cheesily enough, there was immediate chemistry. The gap in the world of men's fashion was so clear at the beginning of the milennium,  the concept was ripe. It was time to give men back their Swagger. Time to go back to a world of yesteryear when quality and fit trumped quantity and glutony. At the time, men were stuck in the proverbial world of khaki’s, golf shirts and over-sized everything. It was like they had lost their Swagger so Neil and Victoria set out to build the brand that would bring it back and GreenShag was born.

Soon they moved the business from their one bedroom apartment in Vancouver to Toronto. Ibai Demirdache was looking to share a hard loft in the architectually resplendent 401 Richmond in the heart of Toronto's design district. Ibai, a former Canadian diplomat came from a family of Egyptian jewelers and trained at FIT in New York. Ibai's expertise and love of her craft was evident from the first meeting and it wasn't long before the GreenShag lure took hold and Ibai came on board as master jeweler and partner.

We wanted window. We wanted walk-by so 670 Queen Street West was opened in 2008 and became the GreenShag flagship. The beginning of a successful menswear strip, now nicknamed ‘The Queen’s Pen’. It has been said that Bloor Street belongs to the Italians but Queen West exudes the Brit. It was here that the magic of the brand could go on full display to the public.

Today,  GreenShag is sold in stores across North America and there are people everywhere that have been introduced to the addiction of GreenShag Bespoke garments. Our mission is that every person no matter size or shape has the right to a fabulous fitting garment, a well accessorized look and a compliment. Everywhere, men are discovering the joy of being shagged, bringing it all back to the original thought; all the world needs is a little Swagger...
